Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event, National Tree Day, will provide participants with the opportunity to add their own touch of green to The Gables.

National Tree Day is a call to action for Australians to get their hands dirty, learn about the natural environment and give back to the community. Since its launch in 1996, the Planet Ark event has seen 25 million trees planted by more than four million people.

This year Box Hill residents can meet The Gables’ landscape team and embellish works within their masterplanned community by planting a tree in the rain gardens adjacent to Slidey Park – located on the corner of Fontana Drive and Ironstone Parkway.

Hosted by developer Celestino as part of its investment into landscaping and nature, Development Director Matthew Scard said it reflects Celestino’s vision to ensure every resident is within walking distance of green space and a local park.

“National Tree Day is a fantastic way not only to bring The Gables residents, and the nearby community together, but it also gives residents a chance to physically contribute to their green spaces and The Gables’ legacy,” said Mr Scard.

“Celestino has invested $10 million into landscaping to date with that figure expected to double over the next two years given work has now started on bringing the largest lake in The Hills and its surrounding natural environment to The Gables.” he said.

The Gables masterplan includes more than 70 hectares of open space, comprising 8 parks of various sizes plus a riparian corridor, sporting fields, walking paths and cycleways. Three of the parks are already open and feature a range of vegetation including mature Pin Oak and Chinese Elm trees.

“Over the course of the development we’ll have planted tens of thousands of plants from almost 40 species,” said Mr Scard. “This includes more than 600 trees/shrubs in the three finished parks alone. We’ve also been able to relocate some healthy, existing trees to prominent places around the masterplan,” said Mr Scard.

By working with Toolijooa Environmental Restoration, Celestino aims to bring the open space/land back towards its natural state to create a real sanctuary in Box Hill.
